Beepers & Big Bangs, III

Another week and another installment of Beepers & Big Bangs, A GenerationX interview where I ask regular people about their remembrance of our era growing up GenerationX.

Beepers & Big Bangs, III

This week we meet Constance Smith of Cosmopolitan Cornbread.

constanceConstance J. Smith is a lifestyle & food blogger at CosmopolitanCornbread.com. She’s had an online presence since 1998 and has been blogging since 2006. Having been around the block and all over the world for the last 24+ years, her family is now settling in Alabama after arriving in the summer of 2013. Her hobbies include photography, painting, kayaking, hiking, hunting and drinking lots of coffee. Anywhere Constance goes, she chronicles her journey with her readers – from creating family-friendly recipes to hiking in the wilderness of Alaska, and now planting roots in the Tennessee Valley. Portions of her content have been published in local and national print.

On with the interview:

Dinner together at the table, coffee table, or get out the TV trays?
Growing up in my house, we always had supper together at the kitchen table. The only exception was when there was some sort of “special” on tv, and my mom would pull out the tv trays and let us watch it while we ate. Because you know….no VCRs or DVR back then!

Did you attend a rock concert? Who?
I went to a few concerts, but not necessarily rock concerts. I did see Cheap Trick and Guns & Roses, but I also remember going to see Willie Nelson with my grandparents and my mother dragging me to a horrifying Neal Diamond concert when I was 13. Horrifying because 40-something-year-olds were throwing their brassieres on stage!!!

Favorite MTV VJ?
Nina Blackwood. She was spunky.

constance TVFavorite TV show
Family ties, The Cosby Show, The Facts of Life, MASH, The Dukes of Hazzard, Full House – I don’t think I had a single favorite.

When I was little, my favorite tv show was Wonder Woman! I loved that show, and once when I was 4 years old, I was going to BE Wonder Woman. In the opening of the show, she always leaped over a big wall. One day as the show was starting, I leaped from the chair to the ottoman…leaping like Wonder Woman…and kept on going until my head met the stereo console table. I ran for the bathroom and hung my head in the sink because blood was going everywhere. (Look at me trying not to make a mess when I was 4! My mother came, shrieked…and then I went to the emergency room for stitches. I still have the scar.

What, where, and with whom was your weekend hangout?
With my girlfriends, watching MTV or hanging out in my bedroom, drawing and listening to music.

Drive-ins or roller skating rinks?
Roller skating rinks. I loved it, and was pretty darn good at it!

Did you ever sneak a peek at HBO back in the day?
Not HBO, but Showtime at my grandparents’ house. I gave myself nightmares by watching the original Poltergeist alone….

8-track, vinyl album, or cassette?
Albums. There’s something about them. To this day I still love that popping/clicking sound. Besides, you didn’t have to rewind albums!

swimteamDid you have after school activities?
In high school – I was on the swim team and in my senior year, the captain of the swim team. I was also on the track team. Otherwise, it was homework, homework, and more homework.

What is the one thing you would tell your younger self if you could go back in time Marty?
I wouldn’t say much, because what we go through – good and bad – makes us who we are. Lessons learned and strengthened resolve. What I would say, is give your mother a break. I was not a pleasant teenager – but that’s a long story.

Favorite Saturday Night Live character?
I never watched it. Still don’t. Comedy isn’t really my thing.

And finally, beeper or big bangs?
I not only rocked the big bangs, but I also rocked the big perm and the big glasses!
